GelRedTM and GelGreen TM

The best nucleic acid gel stains by combining sensitivity, safety and stability

GelRed™ and GelGreen™ represent a new generation of fluorescent nucleic acid gel stains designed to replace the highly toxic ethidium bromide (EtBr) for staining dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels or polyacrylamide gels. GelRed and GelGreen are superior to EtBr and other EtBr alternatives by having a combination of low toxicity, superior sensitivity and exceptional stability.

Nucleic acid dyes are inherently hazardous because of their potential to cause DNA mutation. However, for genotoxicity to occur, it is necessary for the dyes to enter cells. With this insight, we engineered the chemical structures of GelRed™ and GelGreen™ so that the dyes are unable to cross cell membranes, thus denying the opportunity for them to interact with intracellular DNA. As a result of the novel designs, GelRed™ and GelGreen™ are shown to be nonmutagenic and noncytotoxic at concentrations relevant to nucleic acid gel staining. Moreover, GelRed™ and GelGreen™ have also been tested to be nontoxic to aquatic life, meeting the environmental regulatory requirement by the state of California for safe disposal in the drain.

GelRed™ is a direct replacement for EtBr due to its nearly identical spectra to those of EtBr. Key features of GelRed include the following::

Nonmutagenic and noncytotoxic

Safe to aquatic life for direct disposal in the drain

Suitable for staining either DNA or RNA

Much more sensitive than EtBr

No need to change the instrument setting used for EtBr

GelGreen™ is a new green fluorescent gel stain with the sensitivity of SYBR® Green I and can be excited by a laser-based gel scanner or a Dark Reader. Unlike SYBR® Green I that deigrades during storage even at low temperature or following freeze-thaw cycles, GelGreen™ can be stored at room temperature.
